  8.        2.  _I_n_s_t_a_l_l_a_t_i_o_n__I_n_f_o_r_m_a_t_i_o_n

  10.        This chapter lists supplemental information to the _I_R_I_S
  11.        _S_o_f_t_w_a_r_e _I_n_s_t_a_l_l_a_t_i_o_n _G_u_i_d_e.  The information listed here is
  12.        product- and release-specific; use it with the Installation
  13.        Guide to install this product.
  14.  
  15.        2.1  _G_e_n_e_r_a_l__I_n_s_t_a_l_l_a_t_i_o_n__I_n_f_o_r_m_a_t_i_o_n
  16.  
  17.        If you are installing this software from the Desktop Special
  18.        Edition CD you may not wish to install all the products.
  19.        There are three methods you can use to help determine what
  20.        software products you wish to install.  You can insert the
  21.        CD and read the release notes for each product (refer to the
  22.        CD installation booklet included with the CD for information
  23.        on how to do this). A second method is to insert the CD,
  24.        double-click on the icon and click "Custom Installation" in
  25.        the Software Manager application to browse the products on
  26.        the CD. For more complete information we recommend that you
  27.        first install only the WhatsNew product and the
  28.        1_0_DesktopSpecialEdition release notes. The WhatsNew
  29.        product will display extensive information about all the
  30.        products on the Desktop Special Edition CD the first time
  31.        you log into your system.

  33.        In order install the OutBox or WhatsNew products you must
  34.        first install eoe2.sw.gifts_perl from the IRIX 5.3 CD.
  35.  
  36.        If you are installing OutBox or WhatsNew on a system that is
  37.        running a Netscape server refer to the Release Notes for the
  38.        OutBox product. The Netscape server must be reconfigured in
  39.        order for these products to function.
  40.  
  41.        If you are a software developer and have il_dev already
  42.        installed on your system, refer to chapter 3, Known Problems
  43.        and Workarounds.

  45.        2.2  _I_n_f_o_r_m_a_t_i_o_n _S_p_e_c_i_f_i_c _t_o _S_y_s_t_e_m_s _w_i_t_h _D_e_s_k_t_o_p _S_p_e_c_i_a_l

  48.        To determine whether your system has the Desktop Special
  49.        Edition software pre-installed on the hard disk use the
  50.        Software Manager tool, click on the "Manage Installed"
  51.        button and look in the list of software for the
  52.        "1_0_DesktopSpecialEdition" product.  The presence of this
  53.        product on your hard disk indicates that you have the
  54.        Desktop Special Edition software pre-installed on your
  55.        system.

  57.        If you have the Desktop Special Edition software pre-
  58.        installed on your system the following information applies:

  74.           +o You may have purchased additional software products
  75.             included with your system (e.g. Indy Modeller,
  76.             WebFORCE). In order to determine which additional
  77.             products have been installed on your system refer to
  78.             the WhatsNew pages by selecting "What's New?" on the
  79.             Find menu of the Toolchest.

  81.           +o There may be additional products on your Desktop
  82.             Special Edition CD that have not been pre-installed on
  83.             your hard disk. To install these products refer to the
  84.             CD installation booklet included with the CD. These
  85.             products may require a license. To obtain temporary
  86.             licenses send electronic mail (email) to
  87.             demolicense@sgi.com. The content of the message is
  88.             ignored.  You will receive an automatic email response
  89.             to your license request.  Alternatively, you can use
  90.             the World Wide Web to request temporary licenses from
  91.             http://www.sgi.com/Products/Evaluation/.

  93.           +o The PC-NFS Server Components product is included on the
  94.             Desktop Special Edition CD but may not been pre-
  95.             installed on your hard disk. In order to use or
  96.             configure this product you must first install the NFS
  97.             product.  If you do not have the NFS product, it may be
  98.             purchased from your local Silicon Graphics
  99.             representative.

  101.           +o Several software patches have been pre-installed on
  102.             your hard disk. There are several additional patches
  103.             that can be installed from the CD. Refer to section 2.6
  104.             for patch information.

  107.        2.3  _U_p_g_r_a_d_i_n_g__I_R_I_X__5_._3__S_y_s_t_e_m_s__t_o__D_e_s_k_t_o_p__S_p_e_c_i_a_l__E_d_i_t_i_o_n

  109.        The following information applies to systems running IRIX
  110.        5.3 that are being upgraded to run the Desktop Special
  111.        Edition software.

  113.           +o In order install the OutBox and WhatsNew products you
  114.             must first install eoe2.sw.gifts_perl from the IRIX 5.3
  115.             CD.

  117.           +o If you already have a World Wide Web Server installed
  118.             on your system, we advise you to read through the
  119.             release notes for OutBox before you install your
  120.             Desktop Special Edition software.

  122.           +o In order to properly view all documentation for the
  123.             Desktop Special Edition software, you are advised to
  124.             install the Netscape Navigator product.  If your

  141.             to a browser other than the Netscape Navigator, you are
  142.             advised to unset the variable or change it to point to

  146.             Desktop Special Edition CD.  Please refer to section
  147.             2.6 for patch information.

  150.        2.4  _U_p_g_r_a_d_i_n_g__I_R_I_X__6_._1__S_y_s_t_e_m_s__t_o__D_e_s_k_t_o_p__S_p_e_c_i_a_l__E_d_i_t_i_o_n

  152.        The following information applies to systems running IRIX
  153.        6.1 that are being upgraded to run the Desktop Special
  154.        Edition software.

  156.           +o Desktop Special Edition is supported on IRIX 5.3 and
  157.             6.1, but the digital media tools contained in the
  158.             dmedia_tools product do not support MPEG and Quicktime
  159.             movie playback on IRIX 6.1. This limitation will
  160.             prohibit certain sample movies from playing.
  161.  
  162.           +o In order install the OutBox and WhatsNew products you
  163.             must first install eoe2.sw.gifts_perl from the IRIX 6.1

  170.        number of Desktop Special Edition applications require a
  171.        license. Certain applications cannot be used without a
  172.        license while others require a license for use of advanced
  173.        features. If you already have a permanent license for one or
  174.        more of these applications, the information below is not
  175.        applicable.

  177.        The following table lists the application and the type of
  178.        license provided with the Desktop Special Edition based on
  179.        the type of system you have purchased. Other products
  180.        bundled separately may require vendor-specific licenses.

  229.        2.5.2  _L_i_c_e_n_s_e__I_n_f_o_r_m_a_t_i_o_n__f_o_r__C_D__I_n_s_t_a_l_l_a_t_i_o_n  If you are
  230.        installing the Desktop Special Edition products from a CD,
  231.        the Annotator, SoftWindows, MediaConvert and WebMagic Pro
  232.        products will not have a license. For SoftWindows: to obtain
  233.        a temporary or permanent license start SoftWindows and
  234.        follow the instructions that will be displayed on your
  235.        screen. To obtain temporary licenses send electronic mail
  236.        (email) to demolicense@sgi.com. The content of the message
  237.        is ignored.  You will receive an automatic email response to
  238.        your license request.  Alternatively, you can use the World
  239.        Wide Web to request temporary licenses from

  247.        Depending upon your system configuration you may wish to
  248.        install software patches on your system. The sections below
  249.        describe the system configurations and the relevant patches.
